the GOLDMARK Art Foundation

The GOLDMARK Ensemble performed for the first time on 3 December 2017 in the St. Michael’s Church in Sopron, at which time the formation did not yet have an independent name. The “baptism” took place only in 2019, when it became clear that the company wanted to continue the cooperation that suited its passion and needs. In the 7th year after the first concert, in 2024, the dreamer of the group decided to found an organization around the group, thus the GOLDMARK Art Foundation was established, which aims to popularize live chamber music, primarily (polyphonic) vocal music, and in parallel, will strive to enrich the community life of the city of Sopron and the region by organizing cultural experiences, programs, exhibitions, and inviting domestic and international performers.

The group was named after the composer Carl Goldmark, who was not only a great musician but also a member of a talented family. He spent his childhood in Deutschkreutz and commuted (often on foot) to the then newly founded Music School in Sopron.

One of the most famous family members was e.g. his nephew Rubin Goldmark, who taught music in New York to talented students such as George Gershwin and Aaron Copland. But it also could be emphasized Karl’s great-nephew Peter Carl Goldmark, who played an important role in the invention of the long-play-records and color television.
